It's that common cold time of year

Been feeling a bit under the weather and that. Plus I had to go shopping in Bromley with the Mrs. Thus, painting has kind of not happened this weekend.

But I have managed to get some hobby related stuff done, so it's not been quite a complete and utter write-off.

Basically an order of stuff from Forge World which had been floating around in purgatory for a good six weeks finally turned up round my mates house last week. Which is boss. So I've now finally got arms for my Death Guard dreadnought, as well a Blight Drone and Nurgle Chaos marine sorcerer.  Splendid.

I'd also ordered the finecast version of Typhus, which also showed up at the end of last week. Some of the old metal models that GW are now doing in finecast haven't been coming out as well as the newer models which were specifically designed to be done in Finecast anyway, so I was a bit worried about what was actually going to show up on the doorstep. Really pleased with the model actually. Really crisp casting, no defects, no bent bits. I also picked up the Dark Apostle on a whim in GW Bromley.

So when I say I've managed to get some hobby related stuff done, this actually translates as trimming resin. Soaking resin to get shut of mould release agent. Scrubbing resin with old toothbrush. But hey, it would have needed doing at some point anyways... and I have to say my brain was in no fit state for painting.

Will have to see if I manage to perk up a bit later on as to whether I get some painting done, I suppose.

I know I can't do any airbrushing in the kitchen today, as the Mrs is making Xmas puddings for both sets of parents (who even eats that stuff anyway?)

Death Guard biohazard marines revisited & Chaos space marine sorceror

So, some of you may recall that a couple of weeks back I posted up a couple of 3D sketches of some marines I'd been working on.

Well, since then I've put together some more dudes to round them out to a full squad of 7 (all power to papa Nurgle and all that bollocks), if I were to include my simple kit-bash style conversion of the Huron Blackheart model.  Not sure what he is going to be yet. Chaos sorceror? Aspiring champion type fellow? Just a squad leader? We'll see. Maybe I'll do some play testing at some point to find out how he might work best.

Anyway. Here are some pictures that I took the other week. I may have ingested some ale during these proceedings, so please forgive the camera shake!

I've had this model for a few months now.  My original idea for putting
him into my Death Guard was to get the River Troll vomit from the plastic
kit and have it spewing out of the nozzle in the palm of his big power claw
type affair. Wasn't too sure if would look as cool as it sounds
though, and didn't want to spend £20-odd quid for the privilige of finding out!

I've given him a Black Templars sword arm with the insignia chopped away.
I do enjoy the idea of him having his sword chained to his wrist. I've also
given him a Death Guard shoulder pauldron.

Death Guard marine #7

Yes, I counted them up the other day.  I now have an accurate idea of how little of this force I have painted.
I really ought to stop building stuff for a bit and do more painting.]

But, hey, I really quite enjoy building stuff.

Anyway, I worked on this guy earlier this week, so I thought I'd put a few pictures up.  As standard, I've not painted the base. Again.  I really need to figure out exactly what I want to do with these bases.  Ideally I want to tie them in some how with the waterworks themes bases I've mounted some of the other stuff on.  If anybody has any bright ideas, I'd love to hear them!

Death Guard marine #6 (or is it 7?) Who's counting anyway...

As promised t'other day, as we say in't'North (even though I don't live in't'North any more I am reliably informed such phraseology is still common), this post is about my latest Death Guard marine.

This one is another model from GW's finecast set. It's the second one I've done from said set.  Interestingly, on both models, I was a bit unsure what direction my painting was going in, even though I was trying to tie in the colour scheme with the Forge World models I'd already worked on. Somehow, they've both come together and I don't think they look out of place alongside the Forge World stuff.

Somebody looks like he's been having a rough time of it.  There's a couple of bits on the chest piece that I will do a little more work on later.

Quite like the odd shoulder piece on this arm.

There's not really much point to this, I was just experimenting with cropping  pictures. I thought it looked alright,  so I put it in.

Death Guard marine #3

Close(r) up of  my first finecast model.  This was great fun to paint. Tons of texture, a really gnarly model.

From a bit further back, as it's technically known.

I love this back pack part. You can get a real sense of the mutating influence of the warp from the shape and textures of it. Almost as if the ceramite has flowed like thick liquid. For example frijj milkshake or whatever it's called.
So this one is the first finecast model I've ever painted, although not the first one I bought.  It's from the GW Plague Marines box.  Size-wise they are a teeny-tiny bit smaller than the standard chaos marine models, probably as the mould they were cast from is pretty old.  Tons more definition on them that the previous metal versions too.

This stuff is pretty weird feeling. But I reckon I quite like it.  I'd been really wary of picking any finecast miniatures up due to the quality control problems they'd been having.  I saw some real shockers when browsing in shops.  It seems that they've now upped the quality control, though, so the fault / error rate seems to have reduced drastically.  Beggared if I know what was going wrong before. Probably taking them out of the moulds too early to maintain high production numbers or some shit.  Anyways, the set I got were absolutely fine. Sorry for the digression.

On this one, I had a go at using thinner coats, and it seems to have worked for me, as the fine textures on the model are quite visible.  Job's a good 'un and that.

I really like this guy's head. A bit reminiscent of pushing a rusty gas mask through a load of soft wax or something. It reminded me of the last time I did that very same thing... er... Anyway, I need to eat me tea.

In a bit.
